Budapest & Vienna: Reflect the Habsburg Grandeur

The Blue Danube connects two great cities which have retained their grandeur and appeal calling travelers to low down and linger awhile. Each city was a part of the mighty Habsburg Empire, yet each developed with distinct personalities. A three day stay is ideal to explore and savor their sites. Both cities are gateways for river cruises on the Danube.

The entire city of Budapest is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city is 1,100 years old with many of its architectural masterpieces built for its millennial celebration at the turn of the 19th century. Art Nouveau was at its height in the city during the “happy pre-war timesâ€. Lucky for today’s traveler, much remains to admire at the House of Art Nouveau Museum. It houses a unique exhibition including paintings, furniture, decorative objects and interiors. A tour inside of the Musical Jewelry Box of Pest, the Hungarian State Opera House, will reveal a breathtaking example of neo-Renaissance architecture. Also in Pest, you will see the stately Parliament building which dispays the crown jewels and is open to guided tours. On the opposite side of the monumental square are the Museum of Fine Arts and the Palace Art. Most of these sites are illuminated at night and reflect beautifully on the river.

Budapest as a city name did not come into existence until 1873. Buda on the west bank of the Danube and Pest on the east bank were separate towns until its famous suspension bridge was built.

Vienna is a slightly younger city with its true historical significance dating to 1278 when Rudolf von Habsburg defeated the Bohemians and made Vienna his new capital. For over 600 years Vienna was the imperial center of the empire which reached across central, eastern and southern Europe. The royalty loved music and to this day music of resident composers like Johann and Richard Strauss, Beethoven, Schubert, and Mozart pour out of Vienna’s great halls, churches, parks and palaces.

During the reign of Emperor Franz Josef I, Vienna saw its grandest changes which have been restored and preserved for today’s traveler. When he chose to remove the medieval city walls, a perfect ring opened up to build architectural masterpieces representing classic styles. He then ordered them to be enhanced with grand promenades and elegant public gardens. The inner ring, the heart of the old medieval city with its ancient streets and hidden courtyards surrounding St. Stephen’s Cathedral, are pedestrian friendly with numerous cafes beckoning visitors to stop and sample local delicacies—especially pastry!
